Sony Ericsson W800 Review (Expert)
An impressive feature set graces the W800i, which boasts not only the same 2 Megapixel camera as found in the K750i, but also a built-in FM radio and audio player with 38 MB of internal memory and expansion courtesy of the proprietary Memory Stick Pro Duo format. Lingering at the prototype stage, the W800i still managed to impress me with its audio capabilities. Deep and rich audio eminate from the handset, and although a bundled dongle is needed to convert the proprietary connector to a standard 3.5 mm jack, users have the option of using high-end headsets which - if what I listened to is anything to go by - will prove to offer an excellent listening experience...minor complaint of lacking EDGE aside, the W800i is chock full of features, and should serve early adopters of hybrid phone/music devices well
It's not hard to see why the Sony Ericsson W800i is one of the most-anticipated mobile handsets in the market today. Not only does it sport a trendy orange and vanilla white design that stands out among the silver and black candybars, this Walkman phone comes packed with powerful features: 2-megapixel camera, MP3 player, video recording and playback, and FM radio... While the camera suffered from some shutter lag which is common among camera-phones, outdoor images captured were generally sharp with good color reproduction and exposure. Video recordings were also of decent quality though fast action footage turned out slightly pixelated. The strong flash light, however, did not do much to improve night pictures. Nonetheless, we found it useful as a torchlight...We liked that the W800i has an option to turn on the music player without powering on the phone. This is great for those who do not want to be constantly interrupted while listening to music and allows the handset to be used just like a dedicated music player.
I will conclude this small review with a word of relief that all the rumours about SE downgrading the quality of parts used in the W800 were not true (except perhaps for the Sandisk MSDP :o) ... The handset is well built the screen is the same as that in the K750 and the overall quality and feel is superb. The only thing I regret with this handset is that it will become so popular that everyone will have it! The price tag, in Croatia, is amazing: 400 Euros for a SIM free handset! It is cheaper than the Nokia 6230i, Samsung D500, etc ... which are not real competitors anyway, but it is interesting to note the price difference. On my scale this phone is AA and there are only a few things missing that meant that I didn't give it AA+. Having said that, the missing features are things, which would probably be unimportant to many e.g. EDGE, Activity menu, SMS to Calendar, etc. All in all a superb handset, which is well worth the money and would not dissapoint!
Despite an advanced feature set which includes a high quality camera and similarly high-performance audio player, the Sony Ericsson W800i manages to maintain strong battery life. Its lack of EDGE for high-speed data aside, the handset also delivers an excellent overall experience in the communications and messaging departments. The Walkman branded Sony Ericsson W800i comes highly recommended not only for youth, but for everyone in need of a brilliant combination of mobile phone, digital camera and portable music player. What's positive: Size; outstanding camera results; impressive audio player performance What's negative: No EDGE support for high-speed data; adapter required for 3.5 mm jack
Since I am a sucker for cool designs and new ideas, I obviously will root for the W800. The music player is lovable and so is the colorful design. If you are not a big music buff then dont even look at the W800, there are other handsets which can be purchased cheaply. For teens and music fans, the W800 is a god send. There is going to be a lot of competition in this sector with several instruments from different manufacturers. So keep your eyes peeled for a good deal if you dont mind waiting. The Nokia N91 with its stupendous memory particularly comes to mind when thinking of competition. The W800 is slightly expensive even after considering everything its got.
In theory, the W800i does very much share the same functionality and features as the K750i – which I’ve pretty much reiterated throughout the course of this review. But I did also stress the point that it was the overall experience of using ‘the actual handset’ that truly mattered – rather than just simply consider or identify the various areas that the W800i synonymously shared with its sister model. It is quite amazing that by simply making some slight modifications to their product and its offering, Sony Ericsson was able to offer a truly different experience as opposed to the originally-intended one. While the K750i, with its smart-but-serious look, managed to gather support from those looking for a reliable performer (being a truly major upgrade from the K700i), the Walkman-enabled W800i gave those with a passion for music the opportunity to also experience the other vast aspects of today’s mobile phone technology. And the W800i will also be winning the hearts of those looking for something more than just a simple mobile phone design, all thanks to its unique use of colours and finishings – setting a genre much different to the one offered by the K750i. No matter how you see it, they will always be two separate products for two different sub-segments of users. And for those who may find themselves in-between, it all comes down to the question of “which one would you feel good going out with?” At the end of the day, materialism is still what truly matters – whether or not it is the most important concern in your own list of priorities.
Sony Ericsson W800 Review (User)
[COLOR=purple][SIZE=7][FONT=Optima][B]In the beginning I was very contently with my mobile phone (w800i), mp3> top, photo> top, Really part on I was very proudly ..., however, longer me it has the more I have to criticise, sometimes apart from the fact the mobile phone only very quietly the tones plays, does with the time worse and worse photos and settings like tone a certain caller become easy ignoriet ..., was also as it 4weeks to the repair, indeed, the real Deffekt was repaired, but camera among other things small things are as before....
I want to say that every thing about this phone is very good except one thing and that is Its joy stick button which starts loosing its functionality very early. Sony Ericsson should do some thing about it.
i made a Review of the Sony Ericsson W800i that you can find HERE
i agree with everyone else who has left possative comments, all i found crappy was that as soon as i bought 1 all the new models started coming out haha sods law but yeah, best phone iv ever owned
I regret so much after selling off my W800i. The best phone ever created. Easy functions, great sound. The phone completes me. Never experience any problems with the phone.
bouhblah.......Your so wrong in all you say, Some basic phone 101 functions are not included. For example, if a friend sends you a text message to ask you the number of your friend John, read the manual, and you will see how easy it is :-)))2:When someone who is not yet in your contact list sends you a text message, you should be able to use that message to save their phone number, right ? Wrong. On this state-of-the-art phone, you need to pretend to call then, then quickly cancel the call, then scroll through to your "called numbers" list, and from there you can save the new phone number....have you read the manual, or dont you like the phone at all??? this phone can do all you say here,3. The PC software is horrible and counter-intuitive. It will take hours for you to understand how it works and start transfering music to the phone......????5. Random exasperating fact : I have a one Giga memory card and there is about 200 megas of free space on it. Yet every two days I have to spend time deleting text messages because the phone cannot save those on the memory card. And you can't receive new messages when the allocated "text message memory" is full......settings my friend, what you tell us here is very wrong, read the manual is my advice to you. And you will see this is a easy phone, not as you say here.
I have one W800i, and iam very pleased with all the functions it has.For me its by far the best mobile phone in the market. It only has one thing that is anoiyng, every time i try to turn the bluetooth on it jams the phone, and i dont know why.
for those people who are all likeOMG its so prittyyou can tell its a bunch of girls in the forumbut if you want looks samsung is the waybut iv used samsung fell in love with the style just hated the usageit was great when i was all noob and a ease of use phone was good.... but for more advanced people sony is just betterfrom what i read on this phone a few things are dumb AKA butter fingers with the music buttonsbut honestly music phones should not be in a candybar shape i could only imagin reaching into my pocket and attemping to change a song with a 17-18 button choice and dialing 911 by accendent:bad:i havent used the phone but what i can tell it just a phone that acts like a MP3 player not a phone that is desighned to play MP3'si think sony should take that walkman emblem off the phones that dont have the full features of a phone that is able to play a mp3by the way i think the w900i is wayy more attractive and i think the swivel style is nice toothey probably fixed the common p*ssoffs with the phone with the newer styleby the wayy "note to sony"shame on you for a poor sounding ringtone on a musicphone!
the mp3 performance in player is good but when same mp3 tracks are used in tones its very poor response the equalizers dont work in ringtones
i have been using my SE W800i since october 2005 and all i can say is, IT'S GREAT!!!! i brought it to HK last christmas and i must say that i am proud of using it overthere. while other people aboard the MTR are using their nanos and minis, and taking their earphones out of their ears to answer a call from their cellphone, i just press a button on my headset and go answer my caller right away without even taking my earphones out of my ears. and another thing, its 2.0 megapixel is a great addition to the already great features of this phone. its just too bad that its screen is smaller than nokia 6270s screen. BUT, with my SE W800i, i can say that it is THE walkman phone to beat.
Best phone ever! and its soooo pretty MyphoneExploreris a great program for managing your W800 via PC
W800i is the same as K750i except it looks prettier and it calls the music player 'walkman'...
This is the worst and most expensive phone I've ever owned. I bought mine 4 months ago and I still curse at it daily. That's how bad it is.So many bad stuff I don't know where to start...1) Some basic phone 101 functions are not included. For example, if a friend sends you a text message to ask you the number of your friend John, on most phones you can access your "contacts" while writing the message, and get John's number automatically. I could already do that on my first phone back in 1997; but no such thing on this 400 $, 2005 phone. You have to remember the phone number or write it on a piece of paper and then type it yourself.2) When someone who is not yet in your contact list sends you a text message, you should be able to use that message to save their phone number, right ? Wrong. On this state-of-the-art phone, you need to pretend to call then, then quickly cancel the call, then scroll through to your "called numbers" list, and from there you can save the new phone number.Just these 2 things give you an idea of how well-designed this phone is.More bad stuff:3. The PC software is horrible and counter-intuitive. It will take hours for you to understand how it works and start transfering music to the phone.4.The mp3 player software is awful to navigate in. Plus external buttons are badly designed and you sometimes jump to another song without wanting it, or start playing songs by accident while using the phone.5. Random exasperating fact : I have a one Giga memory card and there is about 200 megas of free space on it. Yet every two days I have to spend time deleting text messages because the phone cannot save those on the memory card. And you can't receive new messages when the allocated "text message memory" is full. I can tell you, it's a great feeling to have to drop everything and chose some msgs to delete, in order to receive your new messages, all the while knowing you have enough space to store about 4 full CDs on your card. There is more but I guess you got the message. Just don't buy this overpriced, underdesigned exasperating piece of...phone. I am going to post this review on a few sites, I've never done that before but I guess getting pissed off every day for 4-months deserves some retaliation.
why the need to support WAV, if it does mp3?
it is the sexiest walkman phone ever the camera is great and the flash is also superb it can also be used as light.phone is fine but lacks something like does not support the wav sound its is very dissapointing and does not open large images and the same sonys problem the real player but due to the walkmans quality&memory the phone worths
