Sony Ericsson K600i Review (Expert)
While not the sexiest cellphone in Cannes (that award thus far goes to Motorola SLVR V8), the K600i is a purist design. UMTS/GPRS, a 1.3 megapixel camera, a 1.8 inch display, and USB round out the expected features, while FM radio and full track music downloads fit in with Sony Ericsson 2005 strategy announced earlier this week. The K600i should prove to become the 3G equivalent of the T68 of years gone by.
The device seems to remind the K700 in hardware at first sight, the same memory capacity, the same interface used. But really the model is closer to Sony Ericsson K750..Missed calls, received messages indication shown on the black background in the standby mode is a pleasant peculiarity. In contrast to Nokia's phones, it's hard to miss them due to the giant size. The quality of the camera is poor, but the model is not positioned a photo solution...In the countries without 3G networks the model will be interesting only to those who liked the design, dislike the K700 for some reasons and need this very functionality. And with the appearance of 3G networks the model will be really popular. The device joins small size, good functionality and proved n the GSM market solutions. We can surely say, the K600 will be a bestseller in its class having no direct or strong rivals at the moment. Also one should understand, the device is not made as the most functional and that is why memory cards are absent. The model mainly belongs to the middle class and is to become one of the most popular shortly.
What is perhaps the greatest flaw in the K600 is its lack of expandable memory. Now we have to remember that the K600 is not a high-end handset and therefore would not have all the bells and whistles that pone geeks are perhaps accustomed too. The K600 comes with a total of 33 MB of memory that the user can utilise. This is not a huge amount, but it is adequate for storing pictures and the odd video clip. One really couldn’t use the K600 as a mp3 player of course. The K600 is a splendid handset, it really is. It has a very charming understated look to it and it feels very professional. For a handset of its class it has a superb range of features and it really represents good value for money for anyone looking for a relatively cheap 3G handset that delivers on features and looks. The memory is a bit of a problem, but then this all depend son how you use your handset. A 3G handset really should have as much memory as possible of course given that multimedia plays such an important role in current 3G services, but if you aren’t planning on downloading much in the way of media content then you should be fine. The problems I found with the K600, apart from the memory, aren’t really problems at all, more issues that one will get used to. I would very much recommend the K600 to anyone looking for a new mid-range handset. I can’t say how much the network branded versions will differ from the review model I had, but hopefully not much as this really is a wee stoater of a mobile!
The Sony Ericsson K600i is certainly impressive in terms of handset size and video call performance. Unfortunately, a horrible keypad mars an otherwise pleasant experience, and the inclusion of an MP3 player with only 30 MB of storage and no means of memory expansion is laughable at best. In between these extremes, we find a decent 1.3 MP camera and a bright and clear, yet small, screen - so all in all, the Sony Ericsson K600i comes recommended as a 3G handset for average joe. What's positive: 3G-enabled; elegant design; small size; FM radio What's negative: Poor keypad; lack of memory hampering audio features
The K600i is the one for everyone, and is probably also the more preferred choice of handset because of its unique design properties. Being free from any customisation whatsoever, users can retain their freedom to move around without having to worry about phone menus looking hideously customised, and the phone being locked down to a single network operator through the use of SIM locking. Which is what many of the K608i (3), and virtually all V600i (Vodafone), models will come packaged as. Aesthetically, these handsets will have their own group of fans that find them as good or even better looking than the K600i. But come to those design elements that will make them forever belong to an operator, there isn’t anything that we can do about these! Probably the only upside in adopting one of these handsets would be the financial incentives offered for getting a customised version over a generic one. But putting all that aside, the K600i/K608i/V600i series of handsets will be ones much desired by the current community of 3G users, as well as those seriously contemplating on making the big move, simply because of its much-more-acceptable sizing. Resembling closely to the average 2G model, this takes away one of the major barriers stopping users from adopting a phone technology that once struggled to take off a few years ago, to one that’s finally (but slowly) becoming mainstream.
