Nokia N91 Review (Expert)
N91 is first model from Nokia which has hard drive, realization of which is not bad, the package which is foresighted for improving hard drive’s reliability deserve respect. One of the model’s advantage is good set of additional accessories in the package, it is typical for premium-class models. In this segment the sales do not rank as mass ones, such products take around 2% of the whole market share. Considering the manufacturer’s name, popularity of this brand the product will definitely find its customers. One of the obvious advantages is sound quality, it’s excellent and can be easily compared to best digital music players, standard headphones backup this statement, even though they look clumsy. Camera is one of the main disadvantages for this model, it seems that it was made worse in order to separate this model from others, so they would not lose their attractiveness. At the moment this 2mpx camera is the worst among Nokia’s smarrtphones. Another doubtful moment is size and weight of the device. Most users prefer mp3 players with hard drives starting from 30gb and more in case they are ready for such size. Another competitor for N91 is multimedia players that have big displays. Well, it’s clear that Nokia N91 is not competing with them directly, because we are speaking about a device that has all features packed in one. It’s hard to say if it’s a good or a bad thing, but Nokia N91 will be competing with Nokia 8800 and its successors. The phone will sell well in case you perceive it as technological innovation, the success of Samsung i300 confirms this. Users are not aware of small battery life. I’d like to briefly notice that Samsung’s product is inferior to Nokia N91 in many parameters and it’s not correct to compare them, they are players from different leagues. However those who seek for great megahertz numbers, and other marketing blabber will find Samsung being a competitor to Nokia, here it’s important to see further positioning...In my opinion, considering quite modest plans regarding N91 that Nokia has, there is no anything unreal in this situation, we just have to wait, there will be no failures or anything like it. The users are trying to compare this device with Sony Ericsson W950i, this is because both phones are described as “music phones”, same amount of memory, they both belong to smartphone class. The models are different and it’s quite hard to say that they are targeted for same audience.
The Nokia N91 feels like a man’s phone. It’s sturdily constructed, and with a metal casing it feels like it can take a fair bit of punishment day to day. It’s also quite a big phone, with no rounded corners or diagonal lines of plastic to break up the shape. This phone means business. The bulge towards the top of the unit, presumably for the microdrive, also carries the camera unit, which seems to be ever so slightly better than the N70 in regular circumstances, but lacking the LED Flash. I was surprised to find the unit had a vibrating alarm, given that a number of larger Nokia devices do not have them due to ‘vibration issues’. Given there’s a hard drive in the N91, wouldn’t that be a vibration issue as well? Apparently not. Probably the only thing missing from the package is space for a memory card, be it MMC, SD, DV RS-MMC, MiniSD, Transmeta Flash, Chromium Dioxide Tape Drives, or whatever flavour Nokia prefer this week. As far as the Operating System is concerned, the hard drive is the external drive. For a first generation product this definitely reduces the engineering, and while people may have an initial reaction of a spinning hard drive getting damaged, it’s worth pointing out this is the same style of drive that sits in the iPod Mini...The keys on the unit are my only slight gripe. For such a large unit, sliding down the Music Player controls reveals a number of keys that would better grace a calculator from the early eighties. While they do have a positive action, the bottom row is too close to the edge of the slider – your only option is to hit the key directly from above. Because of the spacing, I had to use the side of my thumb to hit the keys, and it’s relatively easy to hit more than one key at a time. Having the application key far up the right hand side of the phone means you don’t have an easy way to reach it in a one handed hold, although this is slightly tempered by the good positioning and styling on the call and soft keys, and by the 'launch music player' button on the media controls – when you press this while in the Music Player you get taken to the last application you were in.
The N91 is a very impressive smartphone and is the best converged smartphone music device available today. It integrates WiFi, 3G, GPRS, stereo music playback, easy to use sync for data and music and the full power of the S60 platform into a shiny box that will be the envy of your friends (and it is also a phone). However, having your cake and eating it does come at a price - the N91 is not only larger and heavier than your average smartphone but it is also more expensive, and this is something all potential owners should carefully consider. The N91 is ideal for the music lover because it promotes the music functionality to the primary usage mode of the device. You also get a very powerful and easy to use smartphone with an excellent range of software out of the box. The low resolution screen, the camera perfomance, and the positioning of the application key are the main negatives, but then there always seems to be room for improvement in every device.
Not much holds the N91 back from scoring full marks in the music department; the lack of bundled quality headphones and stereo Bluetooth audio is about it. Otherwise excellent audio quality, an intuitive interface, comfortable controls and superb music transfer capabilities including Windows Media Connect support are all favoured traits, as is the massive 4 GB of storage - although we're a bit miffed by the rotund form factor. Voice and messaging capabilities are first-rate with the exception of a slightly cramped keypad, while the 2 Megapixel camera and browser are unlikely to impress. As a result of its varied feature set and hard drive reliance, battery life is expectedly average, but the N91 still outperforms the vast majority of music phones at the time of writing. What's positive: Spacious 4 GB hard drive; e; dedicated key lock; nice screen. What's negative: Bulky; mediocre out-of-box audio quality; lacks stereo Bluetooth audio.
The first thing to note about the N91 is that it's far from the most attractive phone on the market. It uses a "candybar" format but, with dimensions of 113.1mm by 55.2mm by 22mm and a weight of 156g, it's far bulkier than other candybar phones out there. Suffice it to say, you'll struggle to fit this monster into a tight jeans pocket, but one advantage of its size is enhanced ruggedness. The body is constructed from stainless steel, so it'll certainly keep up with your active lifestyle. Don't be too reckless, however, as the screen is just as prone to scratching as any other phone. We're impressed with the quality of the integrated camera, but not so impressed with the phone's video playback, which is slightly choppy albeit still perfectly watchable. Conversely, audio playback quality is superb, and in our opinion up to the standards set by dedicated music playing devices. In addition, the four hours of talk time and around six days of standby time impressed us, given the phone's feature-set. The N91's high price and design flaws make it a tough sell given the quality of competing offerings, but if you plan to make extensive use of its wealth of features, we hardly think you'll be disappointed.

brilliant phone ... nice phone ... cool phone ... an excellent phone ... great music phone ... i love this phone ... i love this phone ... one of its kind ...
i thiks n91 is mostly made for music. and you campere the sound quality with other then you will realise. what youhave. no one can defeat n91 in sound quality.again stoarage is more.
The Nokia N91 isn't that bad for being the 1st phone with either a 4gb or a 8gb hard drive BUT if you have the same problem i have with the hard drive, where it keeps failing then you wonder if Nokia did well by putting in a hard drive that fails everytime you try to use it because when i try to back-up the phone or try to play music of the phone then an error message will come up telling me that the Hard Drive has gone! Other than the Hard Drive problems the phone can work very well with its WLAN connections, 3G, Pictures/Videos (which are brilliant for a 2 megapixel camera), Music Player and Phoning Pepole.
Hi GuysI bought N91 few weeks agothe reasons I bought it for was 31. 3G phone2. Largest storage space3. My brother is thinking of exchanging his E61 with a N91. I'm not sure if he's doing the right thing. But one thing that I love about mobiles is the themes. I tried to change the theme on the N91, and after applying it, it automatically changed the theme back to the default one. That was a disappointment for me.Comparing it to the E61, most of the applications/features are the same (or close enough). The 4GB memory sounds tempting, but I don't think he'll ever be able fill it. But that's not the point.I've read both review threads (N91 and E61) and none of them were helpful enough. Even the Nokia site phone comparision feature wasn't enough.I guess you can never tell if the phone is good enough for you until you actually use it. No matter how much you read about it.
hi guys..i myself bought a n91 a week ago..firstly this phone is great if u fully use it capabilities and features...i myself have a large collection of music videos and mp3 i was very impressed with the sound quality esp internally and externally if u know how to set the equaliser which will seriously help alot..i like the full screen feature when watchin videos..and the 4gb is awesome..its like having a portable 4gb hard disk..haha..the battery life was dissapointing but if u have a few spares which u can get it cheap..tis ok..a kind guy told me to use bcl-6 batteries which will last longer..i myself got a 1000mAh battery which is CE approved..i havent try it yet but it surely will boost the battery life..no doubt the phone does hang a few times if used extensively but not every smartphones is perfect esp with a 4gb hard disk so no choice but to bare with it..even computer freezes sometimes..apart from that the phone even have wifi..2megapixels camera, can record up to 1hour of video and superb design..really wouldnt mind if is big..it ok to meconclusion it is really a perfect phone for music and video lovers apart from some minor problems which most phones have..i would give a rating of 8/10..and IT MUCH BETTER THAN SONY WALKMAN PHONES SERIOUSLY...haha..just my opinion
guys,i dont have the N91 but i had been using many nokia symbian smartphones..i am planning to buy a N series cell and i have read almost 100 reviews of every cell..i must say that any cell does not have all the features pushed into one...a cell may b good in some respect or bad in other..N91, is cool in music and its camera...wat ppl say bout battery life...i have a question to ask them- which battery supports such heavy cell and still have a great life???there is a price to pay for everything..if u get this cell, u need to be carefull not to drop it as it can damage ur hard-disk...and rebooting is common in most of the nokia smart phones...my frnds who use extensive nokia smart/symbian cells must know it..and the battery...dude, if u can get the cell, i suppose u r not that poor that u cant afford to recharge it every night or carry a spare battery.. this cell is AWESOME...
N91 User Advice 1) PC suite: Always use the latest PC suite. They are always issuing improvements etc. The PC suite issued with the early N91's (6.80.22 SW versions 1.xx N91's) has issues with handling data over 1.5GB etc and should be replaced with 6.81.13 or later. You can get the latest PC suite from http://europe.nokia.com/A4144903, or other local regional sites.2) PC suite , Nokia Audio Manager: PC suite was designed for phones with 64-512Mbyte cards, not mobile computers with 4GB of memory. It is good for managing contacts, calendar etc but not for managing the content on your HDD (Music, Images, Applications etc). Nokia audio Manager - same comment. Users should avoid using PCsuite/NAM to manage large amounts of content and keep it solely for managing the phones ROM (C drive). Note also when using PC suite do not start running applications (Gallery, etc) during the PC suite session. Use USB mass storage for managing your Music, Movies, Images etc and/or Windows Media Player (for Music). Note also that PC suite runs in the background on your PC so often when you plug in the N91 to use USB mass storage or WMP a pop up comes up saying " PC suite - N91 connected in non compatible mode please change from UI" ignore this (it is only applicable if you want to use PC suite). 3) SW update (refresh) at home: Always use the latest N91 SW (currently 2.00). Like your PC Nokia is always issuing improvements and even new features sometimes (ex: WDRM came with 2.00 sw). The update process is simple and can be done here : www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate . This is a UK site however it has all the languages, operator and country variants for the world. Read the "phone sw update FAQ's" there. The updater will recognize the version of your N91 (country, operator) and look for the sw. If there is a new version it will tell you, if not then you have the option of reloading the current sw (ie if you wanted to start "fresh" again) or try later. Do not disconnect, answer/make phone calls etc during the process. It has worked well for thousands of people so far . I suspect other sites in other languages will roll out eventually if you are uncomfortable doing the process in English. Also if you sw is not there it may be that your operator or country has not approved it yet. Keep trying. You can check you SW version by typing *#0000#. 4) HDD Users Guide : Nokia has now issued a HDD maintenance guide. Go to europe.nokia.com http://europe.nokia.com/A4158095 and select - Get support then from the list of phones select Nokia N91 there select User guides and from the list of languages select English. Then download the PDF. It has data about backing up and restoring (ie when to use PC suite and when no to), SW updates (goes through how to prepare for a sw update ), Themes and other TIPs. Alot of the tips from before seem to be in here. Also copying contacts to HDD has issues with 1.xx sw on GSM only China units (from Blogs), not on WCDMA units. Note WDRM rights will not be saved with a backup-restore (MSFT rules) but usually when you buy a song you get multiple synchs so it is usually not a problems.5) SMS accelerator : Nokia has issued an application that improves the speed of your SMS messaging. Heavy SMS users have complained about sms messaging getting sluggish over time. This fixes it and keep sms fast. Its recommended that everyone install this and re-install this after any sw update or user reset (e.g. use of *#7370). It is available at http://europe.nokia.com/A4158100 6) Battery Life: If you do not care about WCDMA then in tools/settings/network - switch from DUAL to GSM. Make sure your WLAN "show availability" in Tools/Connection is set to "never". Do not leave Bluetooth On unless you are using it for an accessory. Do not set the HDD as your "memory in use" for messaging (SMS, MMS). HDD is not optimised for messaging. Avoid these fancy 3D active screen savers,7) Profiles : I just leave the keypad tones off. It seems people in the past had issues with this so just leave them off on profiles. Also using the vibra in profiles that had a short beep as the message or ringtone caused problems with 1.xx SW8) Messaging Memory: Do not set the HDD as your "memory in use" for messaging (SMS, MMS). In addition to reducing battery life - its slow (HDD buffering is optimized for Video, Music playback), you have to switch back to the phone memory each time you want to use mass storage to connect to PC. In short why keep a bunch of messages on you phone anyhow?9) Hard resets: If you get you phone into real trouble there are two resets available. Note these should be treated as a SW update (i.e. you will lose data on your phone memory so back it up). Follow the standard backup procedure for you phone before dong this (take a look at the HDD guide TIP section). The first one is *#7370# (Code 12345), it will restore the phones memory and clean it up. If you have managed to get the phone to a state where it will not even boot up then - Press and hold simultaneously Green, 3 and * and then press simultaneously power key.10) Gallery - When you have loaded new content via USB, after a sw update, hard resets, after removing the battery or the occasional reset the Gallery takes a while to open up (if you have alot of content it could be ~ 5-10 minutes). This is a one-off thing so be patient let it update its database and then after that it should be alot faster. The progress bar is a barber-pole thingy that does not give a very good indication (just spins). Be patient it has not crashed or hung-up just let it finish.11) "Out of Memory" - The Web browser is great but it does not handle its memory very well. At some point the web browser may issue an "Out of memory" message. This has nothing to do with the HDD memory but rather the RAM memory. Closing applications may help but it seems to work best if you simply power cycle the device (clean up RAM) before using OSS. Each Sw release seems to improve this situation so its another reason to always update to the latest SW.12) Pausing while playing a song - This happens sometimes when the file has been corrupted somewhat (during ripping, download) etc. Some songs that will play on the PC may pause on the N91. It is rare however it requires the song be ripped again. 13) "HDD unavailable" etc - In older versions of sw it was possible to get this and even with 2.xx it can happen (more rare). Make sure the battery cover is on fully (and its magnet is not damaged - check the little box in the battery cover with a paper clip for the magnet). Make sure USB cable is not connected. Make sure you are not running any applications that are using the HDD. Sometimes 3rd party apps it seems have been found to leave a file open on the HDD even when closed and then this can happen - you may have to uninstall that app. Some apps screw up there databases and it look slike a HDD issue. Finally if none of this works then you may have to do a HDD format, or a SW update/refresh or hard reset to clean out any offending applications.14) Gallery cant see data, content missing - PC suite can cause this if you were using this for content (PC suite looks like it finished the transfer but you have to look at the correct window in PC suit for progress..another reason why it should not be used for content management). In some cases you need to reload the sw or hard reset. 15) Common sense and INFO - Some common sense things - do not disconnect USB cable in the middle of a transfer (disconnect properly). Dont try and pop the battery out while accessing the HDD. The HDD can survive drops (in testing dropped >300 times) but if you are determined to abuse the N91 something will break eventually. N91-1 (WCDMA device Silver with light blue for Europe, Dark grey for APAC). N91-5 (GSM for APAC - Silver with light blue), N91 (GSM for China Silver with dark grey). RM43 is a type number for WCDMA units, RM158 is the type number for GSM only units. Yes its a 3G device (with no front facing camera), you can do video calls but it requires some flipping back and forth...the device was not optimised for Video calls (its focus was/is music!). It has WLAN. It takes about 60 sec to boot up. It supports many different video codecs etc (go to N91 FAQ and type in video) etc. Read you users Guide and also check: Support (FAQ etc): http://europe.nokia.com/A4158095 , Support (UK): http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0...861,00.html, Tech discussion board at Nokia (type in N91 in search and sort by latest date etc) : http://discussions.nokia.co.uk....id=swupdate and finally the N91 page http://www.nokia.com/nseries/i...product,n91.Thats about it so use these and the stuff they point to and almost all your questions and worries will be solved Cheers
I have used nokia n91 product is good & have excellent output audio quality but problems is only is hanging the mobile any time so i have to remove the battery & insert reagain & then it starts there is a weak point in n91.so the company must improve these problem in n91 & reduces the weight also.
Hi all, just wanted to share my experience with the N91. Nokia sent me an N91 to review a few months ago. Here's a quick lowdown: PROS: -good sound quality-good build quality-top notch multimedia features-intuitive controls-4GB internal memory is a big plusCONS:-POOR BATTERY LIFE! (for something that's theoretically designed to entertain you, while serving as a phone, this is a big hit. I found myself charging every so often, even if I don't listen to music that long)-it's pretty big and heavy-screen quality (color/brightness) is on the average side. resolution is pretty good, though. -large internal memory is pretty risky to have inside something that gets tossed around as much as a mobile phone.
