Nokia N90 Review (Expert)

As for the connection quality the device is a typical representative of Nokia smartphones with no serious problems. As compared with the Nokia 6680 the phone gained some significant advantages. Particularly, a voice recognition independent from the pronunciation appeared, no preliminary bookmarks are necessary. The screen is one of the best on the market and the best in its class. The external screen is the best in its class considering all the characteristics. The camera is on the level of the best ones though it's hard to find one to compare with, only the Sony Ericsson K750 that actually belongs to another class (all the photos are comparable excluding the macromode, the K750 looses here). And now a fly in the ointment. Rather slow camera work is a minus. Small capacity of a standard battery, only one working day in the standby mode for the majority of cases. There is no vibracall, the developers were right to think little people will wear the phone. The next disadvantage is arguable, that is dimensions - they are comparable to existent smartphones though loosing to usual phones. The software incompatibility with the previous models is obviously connected with the transfer to the new version of the operating system and Feature Pack 3. That's unlikely everything will be smooth with the majority of the programs, and the company won't get time to improve this by the N90 launch time. The last point is the camera sometimes working incorrectly when called by the module rotation; you might need to repeat the action. The problem is really unlikely to be solved in the future (depends on the module rotation speed). In the end we have an interesting device with some perfect components and some disadvantages. That is for one to decide whether the pluses will outweigh the minuses mentioned or not. There are no complains of the mechanic part of the Nokia N90, everything is perfect. You can read about the camera in a separate report, so we won't stop on it here.

What I liked: * huge amount of free RAM memory - no more "Insufficient memory" messages when browsing web or using advanced 3rd party software, possibility of creating even more advanced programs * 2 Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and autofucus provides good quality 1600x1200 pixel pictures and smooth 352x288 pixel video recordings * high resolution 352x416 pixel display provides SUPERB quality - you have to see it * external display shows current information and allows basic control of the phone and full control of the camera * fast data transmission in EDGE and 3G networks, support for video calls * high quality stereo audio (you'll want to use some better headphones than the ones offered with Pop-Port plug, though) * fast processor * hot-swappable memory card (it seems Nokia no longer hides it under the battery :-) ) * good quality materials; feels sturdy, doesn't make squeaking sounds * good quality, convenient keypad and 5-way key * joystick * compatibility with software written for lower resolution screen. What I liked a bit less: * may appear too bulky for some people * slightly sluggish UI (may result from early software and hardware build of the tested unit) * smaller capacity battery * no industry standard audio mini-jack connector * shiny chrome bars on the sides of the phone looking good but susceptible to scratches * external screen should provide more control (e.g. switching between songs on a playlist). Verdict: amazing phone with lots of RAM memory, fast processor, good camera and superb quality, high-resolution screen. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

An epitomy of compromise, the N90 shows that Nokia is still capable of delivering products with cutting edge features that cannot be beat. Yet, the superb imaging capabilities and glorious screen of this smartphone are countered by its hefty bulk and minor issues with its external display. As always, however, the Finnish maker hits the sweet spots with reliability and connectivity, and also delivers a broad software suite which - with the exception of synchronization - is certain to keep future owners content. What is positive: Gorgeous display; high-quality camera; superb connectivity What is negative: Unwieldy; external display software issues; poor synchronization

Unfortunately, our test Nokia N90 did not always connect to an available network. However, the mobile is a triband (GSM 900/1800/1900) world phone that also includes support for GPRS and EDGE networks. While we were unable to access the Web or send messages, voice-call tones were soft and smooth--much closer in tone to those of a landline connection. Digital still-picture quality was exceptional for a camera phone. The large images exhibited deep color saturation and unusual detail sharpness. Video clips, however, were choppy, like stop-motion photography, probably due to their limited 15fps frame rate. Given the phone's MP3/ACC capabilities, we were surprised Nokia didn't equip it with stereo speakers. However, the tiny mono speaker produced far more volume than we anticipated. Our test unit did not include headphones of any type, mono or stereo. But be warned that the jack is proprietary to Nokia. Battery life was rated at a rather short 4.5 hours of talk time--somewhat expected, given the two large LCD screens--and a more robust 240 hours of standby time. According to FCC radiation tests, the N90 has a digital SAR rating of 0.22 watts per kilogram.

With all the hype surrounding the N-series from Nokia, I had expected a more stellar performance from the N90. I'm not saying that it's not good. I'm just saying that the Nokia N90 is a capable mobile phone, not a great one. It does take some great looking photos, it has a slew of features, and a multi-config clamshell design that would make any Transformers fan go wild. However, the N90's unstable software, hefty bulk, and price tag just doesn't justify its image taking capabilities and glorious hi-res screen. I would recommend this phone to anyone who's willing to plonk down the money for a capable 3G enabled smartphone (with future firmware upgrade a must) with a really good camera. Otherwise, Sony Ericsson's K750 and W800 models take equally nice photos, are much smaller, and have the vibration alarm that the N90 lacks.

The N90 is an incredibly capable device and a good first attempt by Nokia, but the lack of vibration mode really kills it for me to use as my main phone. Still image and video quality was awesome and I wish there was a better PIM suite and email application included with the device. If image capture is important to you and you are more of a phone person than a data person then the N90 may be something you want to check out. I did find surfing with Opera to be an enjoyable experience on the device with the EDGE data network. I give the Nokia N90 four Geekheads for Quality since it is extremely well constructed and rock solid. While the device is rather large, the quality and design make me want to hold it and flip it around a lot. The camera is top notch and call quality is great. Lack of vibration mode and a processor that lags at times kept me from giving it a higher rating. For Geekness I award the Nokia N90 four and a half Geekheads because I was constantly answering questions about the device when I would whip it out and put it in imaging mode. The fact that you can capture some high quality images and video and still surf the net with Opera at EDGE speeds make this quite a device.

Clearly, the N90 has seen an evolution of much greater proportions than most of its forefathers. So what were the costs for Nokia in taking this greater leap forward? Well, in addition to passing those onto its users, which they normally do (I’m talking about those product-specific intrinsic downsides caused by a lack of consideration for its users – which I’ve come to despise greatly), they have managed to commercially launch a product that seemed to require more work before its rather premature inauguration. The list of issues relating is proof that more time should have been spent on making the N90 the ultimate camera phone that it should have been! Either that, or Nokia had placed their bets on winning the hearts and minds of those eager to get their hands on the world’s first Carl Zeiss enabled camera phone. And even if this was true, those production issues with the N90 has caused widespread delays in shipment of this assumingly much-anticipated product, which – as to date – has yet to make it to all of its intended markets STILL.

I’m very sad to send the Nokia N90 back after my review – I really got attached to that handset! Although it did have a fair few problems and issues, it is a very advanced handset with features that will set the standard for the Smartphone offerings coming from every company this year. The most exciting feature by far on the handset is the 2mpx Carl Zeiss lens – a real show stopper! The camera captures beautiful looking photos, and the move towards mobile phones replacing your regular digital camera has really taken a big leap. The handset has a range of other amazing features like a 352 x 416 pixel 262k colour internal display, 65k colour mini-LCD, RS-MMC support, office applications for the most common formats, just to name a few. I can see consumers being put off by the N90 because of its size & weight and also the issue of the interface lag. You really pay in size & weight by getting the unique form factor, and the user interface lag is a very serious problem. If you really like the N90 but these (and other) problems hold you back, you might just have to wait and see if Nokia release any more Carl Zeiss camera-phones in the future.

ahoy!iv been a fan of symbian phones for a while now and i have just recently acquired an n90. i have just one problem: when opening more than 2 applications simulataneously the phone just freezes up and resorts to a blank white screen. i was wondering if there was were perhaps any software upgrades( along the lines of increased RAM capabilities) that would speed up the phones performance in anyway.

I use N90 for about 2 weeks. It's execelent, BUT it has some problems about JAVA games. The JAVA games on N90 only 1/4 screens.... And it can't run none of Game Drivers>< Execept for those game problems, its Camera and Cameracorder are exelent. Only Sharp 903sh can compete with it! Although it is not perfect, but I still very recommend to buy it. I still don't know all about it, I wish we can discuss it together.Welcome to write to me: <snip>PS. My English isn't good, if there has some errors in my writing, hope you can forgive me><
