Nokia N71 Review (Expert)
The model shows no problems with connection. The interlocutor's voice is heard well, and yours also. The volume of the 64-tones polyphonic call is high, and if setting MP3 melodies, the polyphony quality plays the minor role. The power of the vibra is lower than average, and the signal can be missed. A great plus of the model is it is one of the first based on a renewed platform (S60 3d Edition) and provides all corresponding software advantages. The camera is quite comparable with Nokia N70 and has no advantages. In general, the handset is not positioned as a fashion phone; it is one of the first working horses of the N-series in this form-factor (like the N70). This model is not a good solution for ones who desire to distinguish with a product by a famous trade mark and show off with a new expensive phone. It is not as good as the N80 for worshipers of technical excess both considering the screen and the camera. The model is a compromise between Nokia N70 and Nokia N80 in another form-factor, which will also attract audience. You shouldn't expect this model to become a bestseller, it will have sure moderate sale, and the company counts on it (bestsellers are models with the last digit of the index equal to 0 or 5, for instance, the N95).
Nokia N71 is a small and nice looking clamshell. Equipped with the latest Symbian OS 9.1 and S60 3rd Edition, the phone provides much increased security and more power. High quality 240x320 pixels screen and 2 Megapixel camera capable of recording video with VHS quality @ 15 frames per second make it a good choice for multimedia enthusiasts. The only concern is that the phone is not compatible with existing 3rd software for older Series 60 smartphones and it may take some time until developers prepare and release Symbian OS 9.1 compatible versions of their applications. However, this will apply to ALL new Symbian OS 9.1 (not just S60) phones so it is not N71 specific problem. But if you are used to have lots of 3rd party applications and games installed on your smartphone, you may want to wait a little bit until some existing applications get ported to N71 or some new programs are released or else you may be limited to mainly use Java MIDP software.
In addition to Nokia's usual outstanding wireless performance, the slightly rotund N71 clamshell is an all-rounder which fares decently in most respects, be it whilst shooting quality 2 Megapixel stills; playing music - despite its poor out-of-box audio quality; or doing light e-mail and document viewing. Its main allure is the spacious, high-resolution 2.4-inch display which offers the ideal canvas for its browser - but sadly, this isn't fully exploited due to the lack of layout optimization. Still, the N71 offers a sufficiently broad mix of quality features to earn a hearty recommendation. What's positive: Spacious, bright and high-resolution display; excellent connectivity; good camera. What's negative: Needs to lose a few grams; mediocre out-of-box music playback and browsing capabilities.
The Nokia N71 may not stand out as an obvious star in Nokia's current S60 3rd Edition line up, but it has a unique form factor and a lot to recommend it. For fans of the clamshell phone, to have 99% of the functionality of the best-selling N70 packed in, plus a larger screen and a cutting edge OS, the N71 is the one to get.

[B]Hello there everyone! Can someone please tell me if this phone has the option of using the memory card as the messaging memory. That's one of the best features a phone can have like what i had with my N7610. I have a SE W800i now and it's annoying to the max that i have to keep count and account of my messages cause it gets full quickly. I miss the "unlimited" messages that can be held in the memory and when you have time then you can erase the unimportant ones.
dont post on what you dont know aboutDUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
QUOTE(kentamayo @ Jun 30 2006, 09:43 PM)Camera 8.9/10Finally the Camera...This has probably got to be one of the est 2mp cameras i've ever used, easy and functional as well as adequetly responsive. The quality is on par with the K750 and probably has a much better flash too. It's just like using the camera of the N80 but with serveral options tossed out like the saturation and sharpness settings as well as other functions. Images are saved at 1600px by 1200px so they come out nice and big on your screen, with really good lighting conditions, the images are superb and even outshine the K750 in some aspects. The 3x digital zoom on the camera is nothing to write home about, but neither are the zooms on all the other cameras as well. The images also come with complete EXIF (shooting) Data and can be read by ACDSee with ease, this provides you with all the settings and adjustments you've used when you shot the photo. A big big plus is the Video camera, it's exactly like the N80's camera, Shooting in CIF (352 x 288) really makes a difference, you can also choose to save in either MP4 or 3GP formats, the MP4 encoding is really superb and is just as good as the SE counterparts if not better. Well Thanks for reading I do hope many of you find this as useful and informative as I hope it will be.Thanks and...Peace!lol i dnt really agree wid u dere cos the k750 S.E has a xenon flash which digital cameras have aswell whereas n71 has a normal flash like other nseries phones. However i also think its a good phone...especially for business use.
unstable sofware/poor materials,,,don't buy this phone

Software 8/10Ok, now on to the software...The New OS (Series 60 ver 9.1 3rd ed) is really stable... for once, it does what you want it to do and hardly ever crashes on it's own. But you have to remember and I think Nokia does too... that whenever you browse the internet, you're cache fills up REEEEEAALLL quick! I found this out the hard way... as you may remember, I had a problem with the phone a while back, about it losing memory mysteriously... [url+http://www.mobile9.com/invboard/index.php?showtopic=24075]Here I figured the memory must be going somewhere and it turns out it was the web browser's cache, WHICH cannot be accessed by SExplorer... as the only recourse I had to buckup my contacts and dates, then i just soft-reformatted the phone and WALA!!! problem solved. This happens due to the lack of internal memory that Nokia has so graciously provided on the phone *cough* 10mb *cough** My only wish is somebody PLEASE code FExplorer or SeleQ for 3rd edition, PLEASE!!!! This simple solution will solve many other glitches in the phones disappearing memory. Other than this, the software runs really fast and efficiently. There are games out there that are scaled to fit the screen dimensions of the phone, but sadly due to the infancy or the 3rd Edition crowd not many useful apps exist as of the moment. The SMS utility is of the usual Nokia quality, the best and most user friendly among current mobiles. The real swan song of the OS is the Web Browser, there are two actually, a dedicated GPRS WAP browser and an HTML browser which is THE best mobile browser of the moment (Yes, better than Opera) one of the many advances with the browser is the ability to pan through the whole web page through a mini nabvigation window that appears on the upper righthand corner of your screen as well as a visual reference when navigating through previously visited sites. The only drawbakc is that there is a SEVERE lack of on-phone memory for caching and no WiFi. The Music Player and Visual Radio are some of the best out there, (the best is still the Walkman player) easy and simple to navigate, plus it can run in the background without obstructing other tasks. There is also a QuickOffice view for viewing word, excel and powerpoint files as well as 3D Snake and Sudoku (reigon dependent). Overall the OS is flexible and powerful, there just aren't enough coders out there to work with it yet.Lastly... the CameraPeace!
Hey All! Time to get down and gritty with the N71!I've had the phone for almost of 2 months now and I've had time to get to know it a little better. Time for me get in to the details now;Build Quality 8/10As I've said before, the build quility is pretty solid, the high qaulity matte texture of the plastics is beginning to become glossy from the wear and tear and the brushed metal textured plastics are adequate enough to hide minor scratches, still if you intend to pocket this phone make sure you have a pouch or case of some sort, that'll minimize outer wear and tear. Sweaty palms also contribute to gloss-wear that happens to all matte plastics. Also as i've mentioned earlier, it's a wise.. no GOOD idea to buy an available screen protector as soon as you buy the phone. i've already gone through one and the keys really leave a nasty mark, especially with oily fingertips, the proctectors currentyl available have three (3) plastic protectors to cover both screens and the outside camera. The keypad is really made for text messaging, good grippy alphanumeric keys make for easy tyoing. the d-pad is another storry, if you have long nails, you'll definitely scratch off the chrome paint on the d-pad, otherwise everything else is just fine. One of my biggest nitpicks is the plastic film covering the Nokia emblem on the back, it starts to peel, and when it does you can't help but peel it off... if you try to, the whole thing will start to come with it... big big no-no!! other than that it's a good, chunky, well-balanced mobileup next... SoftwarePeace!
Thank you Ken, welcome to .Looking forward for your detail review.
I've had this phone for about 3 days now and so far the S60 9.1 isn't giving me any problems. My initial impressions on this unit are really good overall I give it an 8.9/10. Build Quality 8/10The Build quality of this phone is really up there, good use of high quality plastics and metallic plastics are abound the outside appearance looks impressive with the use of Matte grey plasics for the housing, it exudes luxury and means business and the keys are nice and easy to grip, sometimes the End (Red) key can be pressed accidentally while using the 5-way D-pad, but it's something you get used to. My only niggle is the silicone stopper for should have been raised a wee bit more as the screen lays on top of everything except the silicone stopper, thus leaving rubber marks on the screen. But it's nothing a screen protector won't fix.Software 8/10Symbian S60 has really come a long way since I last had a Symbian device, none of the usual lags or delays i usually encountered during my last foray with S60 (6680) and the overall stability is quite impressive. The themes and icons are what really impress me, even though Nokia uses the SVG graphics format extensively in the OS, it doesn't seem to slow down my unit. My only gripe is that the music player could have been done a little better, but i guess it'll do for now. I guess once you've been through all 9 OS revisions you kinda get patient with these devices.Camera 8.9/10The 2mpx camera is really built to impress, fast reactions and good options really get you to use it time and time again. Unlike the other N-Series phones, only this one and the N91 are held upright while taking photos. Images are at the usual 1600x1200 px resolutions and come with complete Exif Data (shooting data) and can print 8R (8x10in or 25x20cm) prints easily, but if you really want quality, you might as well buy a digital camera, for quick snapshots, the camera is more than adequate. The video mode is so-so in my opinion, but then i never use it that much anyway, will probably get in to this later on.So these are my initiall impressions on the N71, I'll post a more comprehensive review once i get more into the phone.Peace!
