Motorola Moto QToday’s individuals and corporations are looking for mobility to give them an edge, and the new Q delivers. The world’s thinnest QWERTY, Q changes the playing field for mobile email devices by delivering a superior mobile office experience with no compromises. Combining quality voice, data, and multimedia in one amazing “RAZR-thin” package, Q helps make mobility = productivity. With Q, corporations can bring mobile email to their entire organizations while mobile professionals can be confident they can be productive by having a quality phone and email experience in an innovative and stylish form factor. Q leverages Microsoft’s familiar and trusted Windows Mobile software and is among the first devices to run on the new Windows Mobile 5.0 platform which delivers scalable and cost-effective mobile messaging support with Exchange 2003 out of the box. This enables the device to work overtime to leverage existing corporate investments in infrastructure, training and support while continuing to protect office networks, data and applications.

The Moto Q has a full QWERTY keyboard, but unlike similarly equipped devices, the Q is superthin at 11.5mm. A full-fledged enterprise device, the Moto Q will run Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0, so staying in touch with the office will be a breeze. Additionally, business users will be able to take advantage of the Moto Q's myriad voice features. On the lighter side, its 1.3-megapixel camera, its support for a ton of audio (iMelody, MIDI, MP3, AAC, WAV, WMA, WAX, and QCELP) and video (MPEG-4, AAC, and WMV) formats, and its relatively large screen show the makings of an excellent multimedia device. Downside: The Moto Q is promising, but Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system is unproven, and it remains to be seen how its compatibility with Exchange 2003's ability to push Outlook data will fare. Additionally, the Moto Q has a Mini SD slot as opposed to a standard Secure Digital (SD) slot. At the time of this writing, the largest-capacity Mini SD cards are 512MB, while SD cards have reached 2GB. This is a significant factor for a device that sports so many multimedia features. Outlook: Of all the would-be competitors to the Palm Treo 650 we've seen, the Moto Q seems best poised to surpass it. Its sexy form factor is enough to garner a ton of attention. Furthermore, if Windows Mobile 5.0 lives up to Microsoft's promises, connecting to an enterprise server from a smart phone will be easier than ever. Also, Motorola has yet to announce whether the Moto Q will support CDMA or GSM. Of course, this will greatly affect the device's popularity. Be sure to come back to CNET as more information on this device is released.

The call quality was generally good. On our end, conversations were mostly clear, although on a couple of occasions, we noticed some background hiss and muffled sound quality. Callers said they could hear us fine most of the time but also reported some crackling, nothing too bad. On the other hand, speakerphone quality was excellent. We had absolutely no problems whatsoever carrying on a discussion; volume was more than adequate even in loud environments, and our friends said they couldn't even tell we were on speakerphone. Web browsing on the Motorola Q was fairly smooth. What really blew us away, however, was the multimedia experience. We transferred several videos to the device, including a music video and an episode of Family Guy, and we had a blast watching them on the Q. The sharpness of the video on the Q was amazing, especially compared to the Treo 700p, with which we couldn't even get through a whole video because the picture was so blurry. Also, listening to music was top-notch, thanks to the dual stereo-quality speakers. Even when we placed the Q on a desk with the speakers facedown, we had no problems hearing the audio.

I adore the Motorola Q, even with its somewhat limited battery life and few random blemishes. In fact, this is the first non-camera oriented device that I have wanted to use as my day to day phone in a very, very long time. It is that good. With a bit more polish and a few updates to the OS (in addition to that heavy duty battery), this device will be truly fantastic. The Motorola Q has a lot of competitors out there that are equally capable, like the Palm Treo 700p and 700w, and the 8700 series of RIM BlackBerry devices, to name but a few, but I think that the Q's RAZR inspired good looks and relatively low purchase price will make it a very hot seller that is going to put a lot of pressure on the other players. It may not be as big for Moto as the RAZR series, but I think this one is going to make them proud. I give it a "Highly Recommended" rating.

While the Motorola Q packs in some impressive features into its svelte, half-inch frame, including top-notch messaging abilities, EV-DO support, Bluetooth and a surprisingly good 1.3-megapixel camera, we can't overlook the phone's disappointingly lethargic performance or its underpowered office features. What's positive: Slim and light for a smartphone; strong messaging features, including push e-mail support; sharp 1.3-megapixel camera; impressive call quality; good battery life. What's negative: Sluggish performance; can't edit Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files; no dial-up networking or Wi-Fi; no conference calling; display isn't touch-sensitive.

The Motorola Q is a great multimedia phone that can listen to music or videos with any regular Bluetooth device. The Windows 5.0 browser lets you view videos on some websites. I was able to watch my local news live. I also was able to listen NPR.org shows. This phone is a PDA so you have all your contacts and email in one unit.Battery life is not the best, you need a car charger.Email is okay but not like a Blackberry.Overall I would give it a 6.5 rating out of 10.
